Can anyone advise if naturism is accepted on most beaches in Spain (perhaps excluding the major tourist ones)

Asking as we stayed in Nr. Llafranc last year and decided to visit Platja De Castell beach mainly as it looked like a nice beach frequented by the locals.  By chance we pitched up at the furthest end of the beach (purely because our boy wanted to play on the rocks)  It was only once we set up that I realised the people around us were naked.  It gave me the chance to try naturism on the beach for the first time and now we're looking to sort a holiday out for this year, I want the opportunity to be clothes free on the beach again.  This won't be the primary requirement however, we like the "Eurocamp" type camping sites staying in a good caravan with kids pools, bars etc.  Not sure I'd be able to convince the wife to stay on an actual naturist camp site and the ones I've seen don't seem to cater to kids that well

So is this common on Spanish beaches?  Or was I just lucky to find this? maybe it was because Cala Estreta (15 mins walk from there) was naturist.

We want to fly from Bournemouth airport are limited to destinations like Girona, Malaga, Menorca or Majorca.  Or we could get to Canary and some Greek Islands if these are going give more options.

Any suggestions would be welcome, I'm awful and over over analysing these things!

The Spanish Federation of Naturism website https://naturismo.org/ should help you. It's the way we find any Spanish beaches that we visit.

Living in Catalonia I can inform you that you have the right to go naked on any Spanish beach, unless it is specifically banned, as in Barcelona which has a special beach for naturists.  If you go on the net and search for naturist / nudist beaches near where you want to visit you should have no problem in locating those which are most frequently used in that area with a description of the beach and how to get to it.  Hope that that helps.

Thank you both, that web site is useful.

@ Tony - As a local, would you say most of the beaches in Catalonia have some naturism going on

I've tested the concept of "nakedness on Spanish beaches is allowed" by being the only naked person on Alicante town beach. I can confirm there were no issues, and no problems.

Boundaries are there to be stretched!

@Barelee - thanks for testing on our behalf  ;D

We have resort options of just south of Blanes, North Platja d'Aro or returning to nr. Llfranc (we chose Llfranc last year as it looked the quietest / most traditional town)

According to the naturismo website, there's Beach Punta de la Tordera at the south end of Blanes (campsite is also south so that could be good)

Then lists Cala de Roques Planes to the north of Platja d'Aro - Again the campsite is also to the north.  However the pointer for this seem to actually be on Playa Can Cristus (same beach campsite is on) but Cala de Roques Planes seems to be a couple of bays along.

Should I assume the pointer on the map is in the wrong place but if I rocked up to the top end of Playa Can Cristus I'd probably find naked people  8)

Have a look at camping Globo Rojo. nearly on the beach much of it naturist friendly, close to a nice Catalan village with train station 45 mins to Barcelona.
Nice clean site, good eating locally, and both naturist and none naturist beaches a plenty,
About another 45 minutes down the Med from Blanes. Without to many Brits about.
We spend many weeks there most years.

Hi, yes I would tend to believe that here in Catalonia you will find naturism taking place on most of the beaches.  On the Ebro Delta you would find that a vast majority of the beaches are in use whilst not being crowded.  Next to the El Templo naturist campsite at L'Hospitalet there are two beaches, one being a magnificent mile long, and I think that they have some children's activities taking place as well.  Hopefully that will be of use to you.  If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Try convincing your wife. You might be surprised.

My wife, who isn’t what I would call a ‘born naturist’, still doesn’t rate naturism as the main factor in choosing a holiday, and never will, but she has been more than happy to go to naturist resorts in recent years, specifically at Valalta (Croatia) in 2017 and Costa Natura (Costa Del Sol) in 2018, and we are deciding which naturist resort to book this year.

That’s because naturist venues are generally of a good standard, and - how can I put this without sounding snobby (which I’m not)? - they don’t seem to attract any riff-raff, which you might be saddled with in textile resorts.

As your wife has overcome that dreaded first step, you may find she might just go for it.

Re catering for children: Valalta seemed pretty geared up for children, and other resorts we’ve researched (but not yet visited) seem similar; Costa Natura is rather smaller, so might not suit, unless your children are very young. However, the big advantage of both locations is their close proximity to plenty of interesting places, which is my wife’s primary consideration for a good holiday (rather than naturism).

In other words: a decent naturist resort could tick all your boxes, and it works for us.

Although naturism seems to be acceptable on virtually all Spanish beaches, and anywhere else in Spain (in theory), I think the key question here is how comfortable you would feel if you were outnumbered on a predominantly textile beach.

Even I, who considers myself a fairly fearless naturist, would think twice about being the only nude person among many, and for reluctant or semi-reluctant partners (usually females), going nude in those circumstances could prove quite counter-productive. For me the point is to enjoy the liberation and enjoy the social side with fellow naturists.

It might be best to stick to the ones that are more frequented by naturists, especially those attached to naturist resorts.

Thank you everyone for the info, it's helping with my procrastination's!

I think a naturist resort isn't right for us at the moment mainly as we have 1 child who is 6 so a more family resort is needed to find holiday friends for him.  I'd also be happy with just naked beach time although I do like the idea of a naturist resort purely for the more non judgemental attitude - El Templo naturist campsite looks good but is too much of a hike from Girona airport

At the moment we're trying to decide when to actually go, first thought was last week of May to avoid the inflated school holiday prices.  If we do that, wondering if Catalan /Costa Brava area will actually be warm enough, seems average temps are only high teens.  So alternative could be the Costa Del Sol, Balearic or Canary Islands.

Second option which is seeming more likely at the moment would be end of July, in which case Costa Brava / Blanca would be better.

We like the mobile homes on the campsites as they give a hotel vibe and facilities without actually being confined to a living in a hotel room

You can get to El Templo naturist campsite from Reus airport it is only a half hour taxi ride from there will cost 50 euros and the camp site will book it for you, if you wish. We go there regularly and I spend hours walking naked from the camp site into the mountains at the back of the site.

May I reply to two comments on here, firstly to ATourist.  Don't take at first sight as to whether a beach may be naturist or not.  Many years ago we too were a young family where were in the first throes of discovering naturism and were staying in a cottage on a naturist site in the Pyrenees.  I had read that just below the border with Spain there was a naturist beach at Port Bou which was just north of the town.  They day was set to be beautiful so I loaded up the car and off we went.  Arriving at Port Bou we headed for the beach and once there we headed north.  At the fourth cove we decided we could not go further and plonked ourselves down with all the other visitors dressed for the beach in bikinis, trunks etc.  After some time I was getting hot and said to my wife that as I had come for some naked sunshine that was what I was going to get and stripped off and headed for the water, my wife remarked that she was going to do the same and the three boys also did.  So we went into the Med - beautiful.  I then turned around and found that every person on the beach was doing the samething.  It just needed someone to take the first step.  If the situation for yourself is the same then just be that person and you could find that, like sheep, all the others will follow.
Secondly, with regard regard to temperatures then you could find exactly the same thing.  In the summer we are just a couple of degrees below Southern Spain, and are certainly plenty warm in the Spring which is little to pay for what is the most beautiful region of all.  In the south the land is arid and dry but come our way and you get beautiful green scenery due to our damp winters.  We often spend time in the summer listening to Steve Wrights dire temperature forecasts chuckling about how wrong one man can be !!

I have spent many hours on the beach near Canet De Mar and see many of the local naturists year after year, we do have conversations, all be it short ones do to my lack of language skills. They do ask where my children are now, as they have seen them each year and now see that they no longer holiday with us. They all wave hello and good bye daily.
I find it amusing some times when you clearly see there relatives turn up to join the regulars, one introduces there friends or partners then they all proceed to undress. No hang ups what so ever even though they have clearly only just met. I love this about them and as said always make you feel welcome, never uncomfortable.
Trouble with El Templo as with many other naturist sites, NO dogs allowed. Rules me out.
