The beach is owned by the Crown. So what prevents naturism on the beach itself??
If we continue naturism but only on the beach, who is going to enforce a no nudity rule?Consider the case at Corton. The beach is no longer an official naturists beach but as many naturists enjoy nudity there now as before. Apparently there is no local by law in place preventing nudity so what makes Holkham different?
I believe you are right. There may be many who will miss this news so I'm waiting to see how this is notified and enforcement attempted. A naturist mass gathering may be called for! 🙂
The statement on the Holkham Estate web-page ( http://www.holkham.co.uk/html/press_centre.html ) says that discussions were held with The Crown Estate and Natural England. In fact everyone seems to have been consulted apart from the law-abiding naturists who use the beach. This is a very sad and irrational decision and I hope that someone (BN?) is managing to talk to the Estate and this decision can be reversed or some compromise found which does not curtail our enjoyment of what has hitherto been regarded as one of the best naturist beaches in the UK.
Banning naturists from the area will not put an end to the undesirable actuarial activities that are causing so much anguish because it is not the law abiding naturists who are carrying out these undesirable activities. No self respecting naturist would degrade themselves in such a manner which would threaten one of the few areas in Britain that we have to enjoy our prefered lifestyle. Hopefully the powers that be can be persuaded to have a rethink about their flawed decision.

There's quite a positive piece in the Daily Telegraph about this today.
It does say that BN is working with the estate to come up with an alternative. We can only hope it does.
It does occur to me that signage on beaches could to be looked at. I don't know if anyone has ever been to Leysdown in Kent, but there are a number of signs, around 10 I think, there clearly marking out the boundary of the rear of the beach and each end. Ironically this includes the dunes, but they are not anywhere extensive as Holkham and provide shelter in such an exposed location. The front is left clear of signs in case naturist want to use the beach itself. And it can become a very wide beach when the tide goes out. The first time I went there the number of signs looked a bit intrusive, as if the authorities were trying to cage naturists, but it does make a lot of sense.
If a similar thing were to be done at, say, Holkham, with the signs starting well clear of the dunes, any "activity" involving nudity would immediately arouse (sorry!) suspicion. Would naturists at Holkham accept a smaller area clear of the dunes in order to keep the beach if it were offered?

As Holkham is so huge, I wouldn't see this as a problem. Most genuine naturists (myself included) usually tend to stay on the main beach, near the water, well away from the dunes anyway.
That said, I have on one occasion seen the beach reduced to literally only a few feet from the dunes during high tide.

But where to now? Its a bit of a drive as it is for me from South Lincs, though always worth it.
Just learned of this sad news. We might give it one more go, staying well out on the sands and see what happens. The fish and chips in Wells are certainly good but like you larry I'm not sure we will travel from South Lincs just for them.
I suspect this ban will be difficult to enforce and that naturism will still take place somewhere on this vast beach...albeit as an unofficial beach until something is hopefully sorted.
As for "doggers" they will continue to turn up in all sorts of places not just beaches. Very sad that the authorities have made this link between the two at Holkham and the whole enjoyment of being able to use this wonderful place, of which there are not that many for naturists, is lost.
Just seeing the forecast for Sunday - sunny and warm! - I might give it a go to. There may be a siege mentality about the place!

I can't believe that tomorrow will be the last day for Holkham as a naturist beach. Since my first experience there around 30 years ago it has always been a very special place indeed to me. I wish I could have visited more often than I have, although it is a bit of a treck from Derbyshire. Unfortunately I will not be able to visit tomorrow either, so may not be returning to the area for a very long time indeed, now. I could weep.

You would be incorrect to assume that nothing is going on but negotiations cannot usually be done in public! ::)
Many years ago, the beach at Saunton, North Devon, was a haven for naturists, used by families and singles with no problem whatsoever.
However there was a supposed incursion of males with unnatural behaviour, which led to the beach owners banning nudity and using the police to enforce this.
After a time naturists have returned to using the beach, although not yet in the numbers that originally used it.
