The opportunity to walk without too much fear of repercussions is very appealing. The Sussex countryside is a wonderful place to amble once the tree cover gets a grip.

I must admit I have never seen the appeal in naked rambling. A gentle stroll around our club, on a sunny day, is more than enough for me. If I am going for a long walk I tend to go with all the kit to avoid nettle stings, bramble cuts, sunstroke, dehydration etc

I generally go on the SOC walks, and am potentially interested in doing walks at other times, but normally wouldn't be able to go on a weekend. Have you got any potential routes in mind ?

The first SOC walk of the season is Ashdown Forest on Thursday 10th April. I intend to go on it, and you would also be able to meet other walkers from the area there.

The lighthouse walk sounds good and, if it gets organized, I would be keen to go on the Bowland walk as well.

The lighthouse walk will be organised by Blackpool and Fylde Sun Club.

It will probably be a club members and invited guests and BN members walk.
(Insurance issues have to be considered)

I do enjoy walking in the countryside and I like the idea of joining a naturist walk, but my fear is that the recent publicity and tv show about the Naked Rambler has made people even more sensitive about the idea and would more readily provoke a response.  I have no desire to get involved with any conflict or even police attention.
I would be interested to hear from any SOC members (as that is the group I would probably join as many of their walks are local to me) about what sort of response they've had when encountering people, or the police, when out on a naturist walk?

I can well understand your concerns and I think there's some truth in the mantra that one nude man may be perceived as a threat, two gay, three is a group and OK especially if there is a woman included. Free range walking is a bit of a gamble as no-one really understands the law especially the Police. In Kent for example the naked cyclist has been told he's within the law, yet Steve Gough gets locked up on on a regular basis. It depends on what Police Officer sees you and there is a reputation for off-duty Officers to intervene - perhaps they want promotion.

If I go free range I like to do it in open countryside so I can see others approaching. If you can't see what they are wearing then they can't see what you are not.

If the weather holds and I'm not up to my neck in decorating I may head out to either the Stiperstones in Shropshire or the wonderful Berwyns in North Wales.

I walk with SOC when I can, not as often as I would like as work has a habit of getting in the way. Of the 20 or so walks I have done with SOC we have met people without warning on maybe half a dozen occasions. Reactions vary between changing route to avoid coming too close,  pretending not to have seen us and walking past without a word, cheerful greetings and on one occasion stopping for about five minutes to chat while we were having a tea stop. The female dog walker on that occasion just appeared interested by our lack of clothing.

I walk naked several times a week on average and, as you would expect, have occasionally encountered people before I notice them or when it is too late to dress without looking guilty. Only once have I had any kind of negative reaction (ironically I was dressing when she first saw me) on that occasion she seemed more concerned that I was on her land. I pointed out that it was a public footpath and refused to be cowed by her aggression and after a couple of minutes she turned her horse around and headed off deeper into the woods. A slightly unpleasant encounter but not really a problem.
