I'm surprised - I've normally held the view that you feel the cold more if parts of your body are covered i.e. warm and other parts not, so you feel the temperature difference between the various areas.

I'm surprised - I've normally held the view that you feel the cold more if parts of your body are covered i.e. warm and other parts not, so you feel the temperature difference between the various areas.
Just as the extremeties like toes and fingers get cold first, being furthest from the heart, if you can keep those warm the return flow to the heart is warmer so overall you're less cold. I think (O-level biology was a long time ago ...).
