The situation at Cap d'Agde is very complex.
The club and restaurant owners in the Quartier Naturiste (now renamed Village Naturiste), who make a living mostly out of pornography rather than out of naturism, are quite a strong lobby with the local authorities.
The town of Agde from time to time tries to the curb the worst excesses in the Village Naturiste - but these are only half-hearted efforts as they are also aware that this would mean shooting themselves in the foot: lots of visitors are drawn to Agde just for that.
The Fédération Française de Naturisme has long since cancelled all endorsement of Cap d'Agde, except for the camping site (Centre Naturite Oltra) that still bears the FFN label.
Some advise FFN to cancel even that - but this would mean giving up on what was at one time the finest naturist area on the French Mediterranean coast; it would also mean giving up on the genuine naturists who holiday there, and on the genuine naturists who bought flats there decades ago when there was no ambiguity; it would be a betrayal of those who battle to keep naturism alive at Cap d'Agde.
Those who try to keep Cap d'Agde a naturist place fit for families are locally derided as killjoys, wet blankets, "sad people who do not have a life", or even as "taliban".
Finally, there seems to be an uneasy balance between all those divergent interests. The beach remains mostly naturist in the day-time, especially close to the camping site - but as soon as the afternoon ends, it's back to the shelter for naturists.
From the point of view of the image of naturism, Cap d'Age is probably the one argument against naturism that you hear most in France. All discussions with non-naturists in France has to start by answering a barrage of bawdy innuendo about Cap d'Agde, as this is often the only naturist area that they have heard of. Most programmes on French TV about naturism  (you do get a handful of them every Summer ), not to say all of them, include Cap d'Agde. Obviously there is nothing more boring than middle-aged naturists enjoying the sunshine and the beach peacefully - but if you can include footage of exhibitionists, of people dressed in sexy attire, of striptease in the street, of naked men being led on the leash by their dominatrix partners, etc., then the programme has a better chance of catching a larger audience.

An excellent if depressing summary of the situation Jacques. Very enlightening. Thank you.

As for FFN, I can understand the quandary. If they did pull out entirely, it would perhaps effectively hand over all areas of the resort at all times to the swingers, and those naturists would also feel no choice but to do so as well. It seems those interests have won much to my genuine sadness as the original idea and area, was often the first experience many British people had of naturism, and gave millions of people a lot of happy times.

I gave a lot of thought to going to Agde but no one wanted to go on Peter Englerts "Hosted Group" so I have ended up at La Grande Cosse again.

Well quite a wide range of views, so thanks to you all. My original interest in the place was that it was originally a nudist town i.e. you could do everything nude including shopping - selection of restaurants etc rather than in normal nudist camps of being very restricted to just what you bring with you are a very small choice of what is on offer.

However as the general conscious is this is now more of a swingers location and that's fine for those who with to do that, and even though I don't think I am a prude, but with sexual activities in shared area come so many other things including health concerns, so I'll give it a miss.

If you don't mind self-catering then Euronat has very much the feel of a naturist village with enough shops and restaurants in the commercial area to satisfy most needs and no need to dress for any of them - I was naked there from arrival to departure as were many others.
Rental prices for the smallest chalets range from €35.70 to €89.50 a night.

I hope this is of some use.

Interesting reading. Sad that the swingers do give true naturists a bad name. Agde was actually my first naturist experience a few years ago now. It was very normal for want of a better word. No public sex; no swinging at all as far as I could see. But, this was during the day. I left before sundown so can't say what happened then. I would say though that the camping area looked to be the most family oriented part, and this seems to still be the view. Maybe that's where a first visit should be rather than be put off altogether by the behaviour of others.
