Visited:
- August 2008
Location:
- [*]Close to Barjac,a pretty small town with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. Site is at the end of a lane, set on the side of a gorge with the Cèze river winding past tents at the foot of the valley. The Ardèche is a spectacular region with loads of places to visit, sights to see and things to do.
Accommodation Available:
- [*]Camping, pre-erected tents, caravans, mobile homes, timber chalets
Commercial Facilities:
- [*]Supermarket, takeaway, restaurant, bar by pools, bar/snack in camping area
Activities:
- [*]Plenty of free activities including archery, tennis, walks, swimming, educational/craft sessions, live music, discos etc. plus paid activities including massage
Beach:
- [*]Several stony/rocky beaches on the Cèze river - slow flowing, warm and with several "rapids" that are great fun to shoot on inflatables and canoes
Pitches:
- [*]reasonably sized in woodland or on terraces mostly on compacted soil. Electric hookups available. Sanitary blocks are large, plentiful and immaculate.
Price:
- [*]We paid around €25/night and felt we had good value
Overall rating:
- [*]Good value, useful shop, great for families, river is fun for all, on site shop a bit expensive, restaurant poor, bar/snack better (simple, cheap!) - 75/100
Top Tip:
- [*]Take sturdy shoes and don't bother with your bikes - this site is steep! Free minibus makes moving around the site much easier but many will use their cars. 10.30pm curfew for cars in lower camping area means you can be a long way from your tent after an evening out. Your kids will find many new friends so they'll disappear and you'll get some peace and quiet!
My wife and I love La Sablière.
Not everybody is happy with the cars being allowed within the campsite -but then, distances are so enormous... I tend to prefer campsites where they have a strict rule of "no cars except on days of arrival and departure".
I found the restaurant quite good - but then, that was not in high season, so perhaps the quality declines in July and August when the place is more crowded.
Much of the special atmosphere of La Sablière depends on the owner/manager Gaby, a great woman, now in her 70s, who founded the place with her husband in the 1960s.
One of our best memories of la Sablière is walking up to the top of the site in the rain to watch a thunderstorm on the mountains the other side of the Rhone.
Absolute magic - and no wet clothing.

We've just come back from La Sabiière where we took part in an art festival last weekend (5-6 June). Just as wonderful as it ever was! The water in the river was fairly warm in the afternoon (but very chilly in the morning).
glad you enjoyed it we're most envious

They are a commercial camp site and will take anybody who pays them, especially if they produce an IFN card.

Saw this topic in the forum and had to check it out - but with a bit of trepidation as I wasn't sure what it was about and feared the worse. Why? We just booked to stay there for 8 days in September as part of our tour of France. Glad to see all the comments are positive, phew! We're looking forward to seeing it for ourselves.

As requested by some of you, I just share my good experience in la Sablière this year.
I was there with my kids for our naturist holiday last summer.
Wonderful !
This is the place !
Nature, river, friends, activities, kid's happiness, etc..;
All that a naturist could expect is there.
(I will not continue otherwise everybody will book there, and I will not found any accomodation available next year... 😉 )
Seriously, this is a camp I would advise certainly.
Pros :
- Nature, river
- Activities
- landscape
- accommodation
Cons:
- sloping
- no cycling (or only if you are very athletic... ;))
very nice site you have to be fit though loved the swimming pool there too Susan

Indeed - especially if you get lost on one of their hill walks as we did. The most unnerving part was walking back along a public road naked as couldn't find the off road walking track again o) . Fortunately it was a fairly quiet road and being French no one seemed to bother...
