I have to admire the dedication of these naked walking types!

Having spent many happy weekends as a teenager yomping over the Welsh mountains - I used to go to Plas Y Brenin most summers (the National Mountain Centre in Capel Curig) and the school had a mountain cottage in Bets-y-Coed the one thing I recall is how quickly the weather can change and how much we had to wear to keep warm.

Enormous fun, but even if I had been into naturism then I would have definately kept my kit on.

Apart from anything else I do remember the mountains being extremely popular, so I guess you must be using a route that is very much off the beaten track.

Have fun! Brrrr! I'm staying by my fire.

We are walkers who are naturists; it is not always possible to be nude but kilts still give a sense of freedom and a t-shirt only adds warmth. We walk as a social trait as naturists are mentally suited to forming friendships.  😉

The route I will take will allow plenty of views to allow privacy and is only just off pathways. There are dangers in the mountains and it is important that we do not put our lives at risk. Mountain walking is only safe if you have the skills and ability to use your brain.
It is a wonderful environment when treated with respect. Many of our members are already skilled walkers who just extend their habits into naturism as well.

I have one other walker who has signed up and he infests Wales (his residence) so he has local knowledge. I am a true-blood Cornishman so know all about the weather.

I am not tough but am confident that my skin will cope with most conditions on the hills. When you get cold you put on another layer. That is one way but a naturist just walks quicker or finds a fatter naturist to hide behind. Wind is the killer. So if the wind is strong we opt to walk in the shelter of a wall. If your clothes get wet you get cold because the wet clothes evaporate and cool you. If naked and you get wet the next blizzard dries you off and warms you. If really cold we can all have a group huddle but we do not interfere with any sheep.

The skin is also waterproof by natural oils and greases so soap is avoided for a few days before walking, I just wash in water. If I cannot do that I will oil-up like a swimmer (just a light hand cream or suntan lotion).

Nice to hear that some familiar faces here actually worry over me, nice people here. Thanks!

I would be tempted to join the walk, but Snowdonia is a bit too far for me. I hope those that can make it have a good day.

My first impulsive thought was Great. Then I took in the venue and thought hypothermia and COPD do not mix well. Visions of being winched naked into a RAF helicopter on Real Rescues, whilst  a kilted group stood round below and the presenter warned about going ill equipped into the mountains, came to mind. So I will not be providing you with a body to shelter behind.
Having said that I wish all the hardy souls who go, a very enjoyable ramble.

Hypothermia is an interesting subject. I contend that hypothermia is a great risk while wearing wet and poorly insulating clothes. My skin is more attuned to my environment and if I am chilled I eat more food to burn creating heat. If you wear clothes your body does not realise in needs food and core temperature reduces. Muscles generate the heat not clothes.
Respiratory disease. As a yoga teacher that is my speciality. If you do not use your lungs you will lose them. Opening of the chest is difficult if you wear a bra for instance. Another insulation from wind recalls the aleuts (eskimos) who when they were cold hit behind an 'umbrella' apart from that their only clothes were a 'blanket'.

Our risk assessment does state that you must be confident that you are both skilled and healthy enough to walk. So your body may be crap but at least your mind is working OK. You will have to dream of those who act from your armchair and reflect on better days .

Sad about the lack of a chubby-shelter but will make do with a bush or rock.

Go outside and take nourishment from the sky, the trees, the wind and sun.Become one with them and become strengthened by them in your heart and spirit.

I wish I could be with you on this walk and I truly wish you well. RB says..

I contend that hypothermia is a great risk while wearing wet and poorly insulating clothes.

This is very true...  and the worst item jeans. They are the killers. Hypothermia is an issue and should be taken seriously. If being naked protects us from the cold why do HM Forces not train naked, or near naked? There is less hypothermia now then in previous times due to better mountain clothing.

I have no problem with naked walking and I've done it on many occasions, the last time up at 800 meters plus in the Welsh mountains. I'd come up from low level but there comes a time when you have to ask yourself, "Is this sensible?" If not put some kit on, clothing provides warm air insulation. I'd hate to think of naturists having to be rescued from RAF Valley. That would really look good in the press!!!

This walk looks low level and I realise that you guys taking part are sensible. RB being in the medical profession and other experienced walkers, but others who are thinking of doing this need to be aware of the dangers and have the right kit e.g. boots, shell suit, map, compass, etc. etc. .. and the skills to use them. I've seen the hills in all their conditions, being born and bred in N. Wales and being authorised to take young people into the hills.

If I thought you were really idiots I would not have written the first sentence. Have a safe, fun and enjoyable day with as much au natural as you can. The rest of us will look forward to seeing some pics.

I think humans evolved in savannah conditions and running created too much heat so they became naked. This is very controversial. The out of Afriica theorem. Man's brain then allowed him to extend his range by using clothes or perhaps the creation of shelter?. Supposition. There is evidence that several sub-arctic races are naked or possibly adorn a blanket or robe as their first garment. Food is more important than clothes. Wind chill is the killer and needs consideration. Ambient temperature seems less  important. If it is a very cold day but  still one is not so affected than if it in a warm day and windy.

Idiots? What moi! surely you jest? Idiots are those who are obsessed with adorning themselves with rags of shame... 🙁

Not sure about pikks; my fingers have frozen to the shutter release  ;D

I said

If I thought you were really idiots

I don't think you are idiots at all.

You make an interesting point about several sub-arctic races being naked, or near so. That was certainly the case with the native population in and around Tierra del Fuego. What is interesting is although more or less on the same latitude south as we are north the weather is so much more extreme and more windy with the Southern Ocean. You are of course 100% right about windchill about which I could but won't ramble on about.

Any-how non idiots have a great day out.

If you can't ramble on about things in a forum entitled "Naked Walks/Rambling" where can you do it?

I didn't want to bore you, but as you seem interested here is some info on Wind Chill

Recently the old scale was found to be inaccurate so a new one was devised. A whole heap of usful and riveting stuff may be found at    http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/windchill/index.shtml

Of course if you are out in serious country this is actually a serious issue especially if it's wet as well as windy and clothing is inadequate which equals no clothing. (Getting naturist at last!)

Do not misjudge the combination of rain and wind, it can and does kill. But for our walkers I hope they have a lovely day out in good conditions and that we'll read of a great day out soon.

I question the wind-chill effect on the naked body.
There was an experiment with a fat man and a thin man naked in a wind-tunnel. They were permitted to exercise in one case. The fat man hypothetically died while the thin man fared better. The conclusion was ratio of muscle to heat generation and perhaps a better functioning skin (cooling achieved by blood flow exchange).
Tons on the web about the great outdoors but often written up by non mountain men. Provenance is suspect and the only research that needs to be done is by a naturist rambler perhaps?

You cite Tierra del fuego from the voyage of the beagle. There was a lady breastfeeding a baby with snow on her breasts engraving depicted. Many other examples.
