I found it's much better not to ask yourself if it IS OK to strip off and continue but ask yourself WHY NOT.

That way you are positive and alert (bold?) not defensive and sheepish.

I've started going on the SOC walks in the south this year and there are ladies on them. It's not a problem, if there is someone around then ample warning is given to gird ones loins/tops, etc.

I dont mind walking naked on the beach but to walk naked in the countryside and meet someone I would be embarrassed, perhaps if I was with a group of naturists it wouldn't be so bad

I can only tell you that I have never felt embarrassed by meeting someone while naked. Panicked yes, but never embarrassed.

I have found that the sudden fear / panic reaction becomes less problematic as I walk naked more frequently and become more familiar and comfortable with my own skin. I have had a number of unplanned encounters over the past few years and none of them have been problematic. That does not guarantee that the next one won't be but experience to date seems to suggest that by being courteous and self-confident (or at least appearing self-confident even kif I don't feel it) others do not perceive me as a threat and so do not seem too concerned about my state of dress. Not looking guilty is important and sensible choice of location and time is wise (I'd not recommend hiking across a school playing field during school hours for instance  😮 ) but with a little thought it is not too difficult to find free hiking opportunities and to enjoy them without unnecessary drama.
