A couple of years ago on a glorious Saturday I went along to Holkham. I was an early bird getting to the naturist section aroung 9.30 ish. On my walk along the beach I passed another couple who were pushing a bike with a little trailer attached. In the trailer were lots of potted flowers and on the bike were long twigs and some garden implements.
As the guy was pushing his load I arrived at the nude area a good few minutes before them. Having got my self settled I sat and watched what then took place. Some 15 or so meters before the signs denoting the nude area they stopped and the chap drew a large circle in the sand with a garden rake. He then with the assistance of his female friend pushed the long twigs into the sand in the centre of the circle to form an arch. This was decorated with ribbons and the potted flowers put around the base. The whole construction must have taken over an hour.
Shortly after completion people arrived at the circle with folding picnic chairs and cool boxes and seated themselves around the circle. By early afternoon there must have been about 50+ people around the circle. Everyone dressed, not in swimming gear but slacks and shirts, the ladies in summer dresses. Early afternoon saw the arrival of a bride and the usual entourage. Some form of ceremony was then conducted and everyone appeared to have a great time.
Those of you who know Holkham know how far it is to walk from the car park to the nude area so why did all these people walk so far with all of there chairs etc and set up so close to the nude area and not join us even partialy.
It was all packed up by the time I left around 6pm.
Anyone else witnessed anything strange on or very near a nude beach. Still don't know what it was all about, all of the people around me, and there were quite a few were also curious but none of us had the courage to ask.

Not seen anything quote that strange but it seems common practice for people to set up in beaches as close to naturist sections as they possibly can, and have no intention whatsoever of disrobing! I'm afraid I just dismiss them as meerkats. Maybe we can ascribe kinder motives-they're too shy,or chicken out, but if that's the case, and you've decided not to, move on! Sorry if that sounds harsh but after this summer I'm sick to death of being stared at by these people when I'm in a naturist part of a mixed beach, it's rude. Most IMO are just trying to 'cop a look'. As for that wedding party,who knows? Most odd!

I've noticed at Studland that women who want to go topless will do so nearer the naturist beach, as if there is somehow a halfway house. Maybe the people wanted to appear 'cool' and naturist friendly but without actually pushing their guests into it....

That could be one aspect of it Lee. But fully clothed and goggling, and setting up their pitch pretty much under the 'naturist section' signs is quite another thing IMO!

Hang on a minute. Bob says that they set up some 15 metres from the Naturist sign. That's not exactly 'under the naturist sign' and nor does he actually 'report' any incident of goggling either.
The fact of the matter seems to be that if Bob and his compatriots where an equal-ish distance from the sign then there was a good 60 metres between them. And if they were in a circle, then at least half of them would be facing the other way lol.
Surely somebody on the non-naturist side has every much right to be there as naturists on the naturist side? The fact that they did should be applauded IMHO because it demonstrates that they were as equally comfortable about being there 'despite' the nude people. Isn't that what 'acceptance' is all about?
Some of the better beaches we've been on are in Portugal where clothed and nude sunbathers coexist quite happily with each other and everyone is comfortable. Is there anything wrong with that ..... or is it not quite purist enough? 🙂
I'd take a guess that they simply knew that the naturist bit was at the quieter end of the beach and that's where they preferred to have what sounds like a nice ceremony.

Many years ago we were on holiday at Monitalivet and walking along the beach and came to a clear line for the end of the official naturist section.
Naked and clothed couples and families were sitting almost back to back at this line without any problems.
Clothed or semi clothed people are quite likely to sit at the edges of the naturist section of a beach until they make the decision to literally cross the line and join the naturists or move away, I know this happened to us.
The problem is with those who skulk in the dunes.

We experienced a demarkation line on a town beach in Croatia. The naturist part was at one end apart from one or two individuals, mostly women that lay on their own completely naked and surrounded by textiles. Nobody seemed to mind.
As we were right on the edge of the naturist section we had a good laugh when a couple not 5 metres from us who were changing out of their bathing costumes into their clothes under the protection of a large piece of material that seemed to have a draw string round the neck.
The woman seemed to manage OK but when the man was getting changed he ended up stepping on the material and started hopping round on one leg until he fell over. I know we should not stare but we had tears running down our faces at their antics in trying not to expose themselves.
Had they simply taken off their costumes and put on their clothes nobody would have even noticed, as it was all the naturist part of the beach and many of the other people around them ended up with some great entertainment, much to their embarrassment. When they had cleared up and were leaving I was glad to see however that they both seemed to see the funny side of the episode as they were actually laughing as they walked away.

Or perhaps they were worried some concerned citizen might ring the police and complain about devil worshippers. (Its a problem pagans face quite a lot. Rather like naturists being labelled as perverts and swingers. Oh wait, that happens to pagans as well ;D )

We have observed textiles on our local naturist beach who come down, strip off competely and then put on bathing costumes, or who strip out of their costumes, use the showers and then put their costumes back on. Why all the bother if they are going to be naked at some stage in front of everyone on the beach, why not just stay naked ? Bonkers.

It could be that some of them are flirting with the idea of going all the way and are building their confidence. Alternatively maybe they quite rightly think that they are likely to get less abuse and staring from us rather than in a textile location. After all if they set up next to our section there are less likely to be prudes around (they would put as much distance between us and them as possible).
If you are wrapped up in yourself, then you are overdressed!
I am quite open to meeting other folks at organised nude venues that are within my reach financially and socially.
