Our first experience was on holiday in Switzerland. The hotel had a large spa area, so on our first evening we set off to find it wearing our hotel dressing gowns with swimming costumes underneath.

We couldn't believe our eyes when we walked in through the door and discovered all the other guests were using the facilities without any costumes on. A quick decision was required; turn around and walk out; or join the other guests and strip off?

We decided to join the other guests! That was 20 years ago and we've been going back (and to other similar hotels) ever since.

What a perfect introduction to social nudity.

Thank you, yes it was. My wife won't go to organised naturist venues or events, but because in Switzerland it is merely the custom is for everyone to be naked, she is fine with it.

I'm not sure I would have been that brave.  Good for you  🙂

We had a similar experience this year on the beach in Sourh France. My wife was initially hesitant about taking her bikini bottom off. She did after a few minutes and she felt very invigorated.

She is now happy to plan a naturist resort beach holiday for next year.

...., but because in Switzerland it is merely the custom is for everyone to be naked, ...

That's is the key I think,  having also had a first public experience is a Spa, but in Eastern Europe, followed by a Spanish beach, it's not I think even seen as Naturism.
My other half is from Eastern Europe, she isn't a naturist, but can't understand why us Brits would even consider to wear a costume in sauna etc, it's just not hygienic !!!  Equally changing in a unisex changing room and dropping the towel for showers and whirlpool in the Spa is simply normal.... and isn't naturism to her.
Leaves me a little puzzle just what type of holiday I could book  😉

I agree completely - in these parts of Europe I'm sure nobody at all thinks of it as a naturist activity; it's just the normal custom. I've even been to a leisure complex in Switzerland where swimming costumes were compulsory in the pool, but the single changing area was mixed.

My local pool has a unisex changing area with separate cubicles, the showers however are open and strictly costumed.  There are separate single sex changing areas for the gym where nudity is normal is the showers.  The Spa and Sauna are  costumed as are nearly all UK saunas; I know it's crazy but we are British!!

Sorry but that's no excuse. I'm British but have never worn a costume in a sauna.

After my bowel cancer operation I consider it especially important to shower naked before a swim to ensure that my nether regions are suitably cleaned.
On occasion I have been obliged to traverse all sorts of parts of leisure complexes wrapped only in a towel because naked showering is not permitted in the pool showers.

You mean that in situations where nudity is forbidden in a particular Sauna you still go nude or may be you just use a towel.  I suppose a secure towel would be fine but defiance on the local custom may be pushing boundaries too far.  I agree that not being allowed to use saunas/steamrooms nude is silly.  I'd like to see adult only swim sessions universally CO but it won't happen!

I am to visit the NSG swim on the 12th, as an introduction.
I know that the County Council (maybe Borough) banned naked use of the sauna after having found used unsavoury latex articles in there following an all male usage, last year.
Whether The NSG are allowed to use the Sauna naked I do not know.
It will be interesting to find out what the situation is.
