I chose a few poses and the class teacher asked me to do some. Several 5 minute poses, then a 15 minute then a 30 minute which is quite hard!
This is quite typical in my experience (both as a model and a not-very-good artist). I developed a back problem that made the long poses sometimes uncomfortable but if you're not cursed with such issues then it's usually not too bad.
This is something I have really fancied doing myself. I have tried to find somewhere local requiring models but up to now have not been able to locate anywhere.

There are life drawing classes in Newton Solney near Burton on Trent, Ashbourne and Derby all of which can be easily accessed from the A50.

I have done some life modelling for a group that meets in Bakewell with Diane Kettle, might be a bit of a way to drive and she likes to meet with new models first to make sure your motivation is genuine.
I was quite nervous on the first occasion but once my robe was off it seemed a very natural and relaxing thing to do. The organiser will direct you for the poses and you will find that everyone is very friendly.

I would not mind to do some nude modeling but its a long way to Bakewell for me.
I went to Abbey House gardens and mixed with textile people and felt very relaxed and comfortable, not sure about them but they seem to not mind I was naked or else they would not be there.

Here's a question!
Do life models suggest poses themselves or are they 'directed' by either the group of artists or someone else 'in charge'?
Normally the tutor suggests poses although it does help if you can suggest some. Props such as a stool are useful as well.
A bit more for you, look at old masters, figurrines, figure painting artists and sculptures by Rodin.
Also practice poses that show off different muscle groups using props to tense muscles which might not normally get tensed.
The key thing is as I said previously, the course leader/tutor should guide you ideally.
