Had my first naturist walk of 2014, walking from Wendover to Princes Risborough (along part of the Ridgeway).
Thought I might have picked a reasonable time of the day (early-ish morning) to avoid running into too many people, and, on reflection, it wasn't too bad I guess (managed to walk between 30-50% of the 11km trek uncovered).
I did discover that my shorts were woefully inadequate for covering up in a hurry -- which wasn't a major problem, apart from the fact that many of the paths were hellaciously muddy, so it was an exercise in futility trying to get feet through shorts without covering them in mud (think of the board game "Operation" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_(game) and you get the idea).
Positives: reasonably long stretches where I could walk unclothed without bothering anyone; noticing a slight movement in the tree line and managing to get covered before four women wandered out of a side path.
Negatives: a couple who looked at me like I was nuts for not wearing a shirt (a shirt no less!?!); the mud; and clothed walkers ruining my fun (damn those textiles! ;D )

It sounds like you had a pretty successful walk, and I reckon that 30 - 50% uncovered is pretty good. Regarding the shorts, issues with mud and putting them on in a hurry, were why I started using a wrap around skirt after a couple of walks with SOC. Unless its really warm, textiles will always think you are nuts for not wearing a shirt, despite the fact that you are probably quite comfortable without it, so the wearing the skirt won't make much difference to their opinion. When walking on my own in similar attire I've had a few looks but nothing thats put me off, and many people have greeted me normally.

Ha! Good point. For the matter, I'm thinking a towel won't make a lot of difference to their opinion either, perhaps... I'll be considered a nutcase no matter what. ::)
