My thoughts on reading the original post are wouldn't it have been nice instead of reading ¨We would like to see a campaign¨ that it read ¨We are starting a campaign¨.  You will never get more clothing official beaches in the UK unless people get off their backsides and get things moving themselves instead of always expecting others to do it.  This was the very attitude I used to fight against in our club where the majority of the members sat back and expected the committee to do everything for them.  Sad.

So the bottom line is (sorry) that if people can actually use beaches that are tolerated if not actually officially official darn sarf, just be grateful you don't live in the Taliban Republic of East Yorkshire. Because, believe me, there is no fun allowed here!

Edit: I agree Tony. And I have done what I could, however, at the present time of uncertain employment I cannot. And I also know that as long as certain factions are here in power it is not going to happen.

Well I see I should be careful with my words here on this point, but I do have two separate points to make:

(1) In various forums here we have had discussions about official nudist walking trails, nudist beaches etc and many have come back stating that being naked in public is not illegal and if there were official designated areas then everywhere else would be banned (eventually). Whilst I do understand this and I am a long term nudist and I do like walking through woods, country walks and beaches naked when the weather and others permit, I don't think anywhere in the world actually fully accepts nudity - dress down Fridays doesn't mean go nude Fridays and even when there are national nudist days a very, very small percentage of people know about it and even less join in - probably less than 0.01%, and many nudists don't tell others they are. As (I think Jon) made reference too, often areas of official beaches end up being areas for sexual activities and this does not help at all to 'we just don't want to wear clothes'. Any current areas are nudist either because they are privately owned (by a nudist Abbey House various beaches, clubs etc) or because the local council is sympathetic. We all know being nude elsewhere will often cause an issue that many of us don't want and hence the wish for designated areas - this is also my wish.

(2)  Clubs - north south divide. Naturally this exists (I'm more north) and the south has more for a few reasons - its warmer down south and there is a much larger population down south including holiday makers where as part of relaxing, they are more likely to enjoy the sun. Overall I suspect more clubs and areas that tolerated nudity will decrease in the light of all the scandals and pressure on budgets - its just so much simpler to just say no. In addition to this (back to point 1) not that many people are prepared to ask for such facilities or go to them because of what they think goes on - even though I'm sure more and more people do go around naked at home, go to nudist beaches on holiday - or at least topless.

In short we need to pick our battles and have a clear message. Nudity should be safe (wider sense) and the only way to do this is to have designated areas (beaches, saunas, clubs) with clear advertising and clear rules and enforced them.

Rant over.

We are quite happy to start a campaign, and apologies for upsetting nudists who live further north than we do!!!!

Sussex nudists I was not upset. It's not personal. You are more than welcome to post anything you wish to. I might get a little exasperated on here due to having too much work and not enough naturism, but this place is meant for debate after all. Your wishes are laudable but I think some coffee needs to be sniffed first. We are very hard pushed enough to hold onto the very few beaches we have in the current political climate here. We have an ongoing media paedo obsession and there is a certain religion which too much as well is being said about with possibly worrying influence in the future. Added to that, there has been an unwelcome spate of people in charge of swims and organisations who have had their collar felt. Referenced above. Added to some swinger clubs masquerading as naturist ones, our cause in the UK is more and more pushing glue uphill. Yes, BN does some very good work, and we got Holkham back, along with more events like Stoke. That's great.

However, I am talking like you, about more beaches and indoor facilities like saunas that can be used as they should be used. And now, even here naturists cannot agree as you see. For me, I like designated. Because if a place is designated there can be no arguments, and I feel on safer ground myself. Clothing optional is great in theory but excepting a very few locations like Fuerteventura  where the beaches are so vast, nobody can see anyone else, it can lead to ructions and discomfort. I cannot see it ever being the policy here, as it would mean a huge cultural change. And even in Germany, I think their beaches are designated, not mixed. Of course, a nirvana would be saunas like there, that are nude all the time, except perhaps one day a week, where strange people who wish to be clothed use them as such. This is a huge cultural shift as well, which won't happen. Not only do we not have a culture to accept it, we don't have a spa culture as the Germans have. In the case of Selby, that used to be run by the North Yorks council bizarrely for the benefit and wishes of all visitors. Wonderful. Then the cuts happened. They sold the operations to a private firm who was only interested in selling very expensive gym memberships, and the casual users who would pay fivers for those regular naturist sessions in the spa area meant nothing to them. That has been the story up here. The same happened in York.

So, sorry to sound gloomy (I am truly not, but if you actually lived here and experienced the wonderful range of naturist opportunities that don't exist you'd understand) but I had over a decade of going to events and enjoying naturism regularly here-and a social life- and now I don't. And it wasn't because of any lack of support, or no people going etc. It could be termed malicious. (The last event at York Waterworld, the owners deliberately turned off the spa and 'forgot' to lay on lifeguards, so everybody had a completely wasted journey. They were given no notice). Just so's people can understand what we have against us, here in any case, and just be grateful if you can get out to beaches and enjoy them in peace. Though don't let it stop you campaigning by all means.
