I like a challenge so I spent some time on Saturday trying to get a self-timer shot with the dogs. This was the best one of the batch:
The puppy (bottom left) is now 15 weeks old and is rapidly turning into an inexhaustible bundle of energy, fun and trouble. (The German Shepherd and Jack Russel belong to a friend who was unable to walk them that day so I took them with me)
Have fun,
Ian.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
Must have a look for a remote for my samsung and a decent mini tripod, tried two of the cheapo ones and they turned out rubbish.
I can recommend the Cullmann tripods, solidly engineered. I have a Gorillapod also which is OK, but the ball head mount was over £20 so I went for the Culmann which included a decent mount. It can even hold my Canon DSLR solidly.
Cheers Smash will have a look at that, don't think they do a remote for my camera because they do an app for the same purpose......... will have to snaffle the wife's phone?, mine is too ancient?.

Great shot - I feel sorry for the camera though trying to focus on all those dogs at once!

Thanks. The camera did not seem to have too much trouble, but you try getting four happy, playful dogs all in shot at the same time! It took me a few attempts and I was using bursts of 10 shots after the initial delay (one of the nice features of Canon cameras is the flexible self-timer).
Have fun,
Ian (also known as the ugly geezer with four good looking dogs...)

Tried some more B&W arty shots.... Shelf timer and tripod... all very subjective and mater of personal taste of coarse ... but fun trying as the sun was out streaming though the window.....
The remote shutter control purchased from amazon, arrived and I have been practising with it, I look a bit shell shocked, but here is my first efforts.

After years of taking selfies.. Well when I say selfies, most of the photos were either out of focus, out of frame or photos of the ceiling..
I still have one I took over 25 years ago with a camera with no timer I had to use a stick and wack the shutter button lol..
But now at last I have a Samsung S7 which I just open the camera, prop it up so I'm in frame and when I'm ready I just say 'CAPTURE' and it either takes 1 or 3 pictures. I can then move and say 'CAPTURE' and it takes more.. I absolutely love it.. only problem now is sorting through all the photos to find the best ones to edit and keep..
When I was (much) younger than now, I did try self-timers. With mixed results.
Although I still use remote IR control since it allows me to be in shot and to get the SLR camera to focus on me before taking the shot, on other cameras I have (with no IR control) they either have face / wink detection or as stated some have voice - I have very mixed results with those since unless there is a subject there when you activate things they often focus in the wrong area (few small cameras allow you to set the focus area) so don't pick up your face or with voice are just out of focus. On those since they have HD recording (including with a delay) I have now started to just take a short HD video and then take a frame grab from that - so far always in focus and since you can do a few 'poses' and also ensure you capture the action you want. I delete the video file after, I get the picture I want. I still prefer my SLR - but its a bit big to carry around everywhere.
I have had some success with self timer shots. The biggest problem is getting the right colour balance when a nude body is imposed after the shot is focussed on the background. I often adjust the colours on PhotoPlus afterwards. A few examples attached.
I find my iPhone takes what seem like perfectly good timer photos to me. The only problem I ever have is finding somewhere suitable to prop it up and sometimes there a bit of trial and error getting the right shot but easy enough to delete and adjust until I’m satisfied.
My avatar picture was taken with my iphone using the 10 second delay button to give me time to get into position.
As EdNaturist says, the challenge is finding something to balance the iphone on. For this shot, I used the picnic bench and a tin of beans to rest the iphone in an upright position.

I'm guessing that some sort of purpose made stand exists.
When I was more into photography then I am now, I had a small bean bag that I used to use.
