To bare or not to bare – that is the question.

Sunbathing topless on a public beach is a very personal decision and not something all women are happy to do.

Whether it’s because you feel self-conscious, worry you’re too old to be flaunting your boobs, or wonder about the health risks of exposing your nipples to the harsh rays of the sun – there are usually quite a few reasons why most of us would rather have a few tan lines compared to an all-over bronzed glow.

But how many people do you think would be willing to bare all on the beach?

According to the latest research from plastic surgery group My Breast, only 3% of women would sunbathe topless on a beach.

Although if you’re worried about offending your other half, don’t be - as 60% of men would be happy for their partner to reveal their boobs.

So what’s stopping us from feeling comfortable enough to strip off – nipples and all?

Apparently 38% of women are worried about sunburn, 29% feel self-conscious about the shape, size and appearance of their breasts, and 11% said it depends on whether they were single or not.

On the plus side, if we spot other women braving the nipple burn it will encourage 23% of us to consider topless sunbathing on a beach – although 53% of women would never contemplate revealing such an intimate part of their body.

Seems that the probability of baring boobs is very low, so baring all must be very remote!!!

I suggest that it's the fear of gawkers or sanctimonious disapproval on 'family' beaches in the UK that stops many.

Yes, certainly in the UK the fear of being seen is a worry, at least that's what I've been told. Many will go topless on a foreign beach holiday, but the trend does appear to be falling and we're regressing to Victorian values.

Yes, strange that our films, TV, art and literature are more full of sex, nudity and bad language than ever, yet in 'real life' many people are becoming more and more puritanical.

I was thinking much the same the other day - that what we watch is more violent, has more nudity, more sex and more bad language and yet at the same time "in real life" we are becoming almost hysterical - especially if we see a nude or nearly nude body!!!  Having said that - I was on both the official and unofficial beach in Brighton during the last hot spell (which already seems like ages ago) and at the unofficial one there were two girls sunbathing topless on the first visit and one on my second trip there and on the official beach, one lonely lass as opposed to about 40 fully nude males.  I wonder whether the naturist/partially naturist lifestyle just appeals more to men?  Interesting how the only place these women felt comfortable enough to go topless were on beaches where the guys were fully nude.  I know on the South Coast we can really go over the top about topless sunbathing!

Well again I can list Druridge Bay beach in Northumberland for topless or nude sunbathing. If nude, discretion is needed, and some distance from people, but my girlfriend is quite happy to go topless on the beach and has never felt uncomfortable. Just not around the family section near Cresswell though. Anywhere else should be fine if it's good enough weather. !!!

Julie never ever went topless on a clothed beach , but strips off on a naturist beach .

It is very hard to describe the inner enjoyment of being naked .

I do not only think that women should be allowed to be topless on beaches but BOTH MALES AND FEMALES should be allowed to be naked on beaches providing it is non-sexual.

I know a lot of women who would never go topless or nude on a British beach but would do so with no hesitation on holidays abroad.

To be honest my wife only rarely goes topless on a beach. It is all or nothing with her, we actually do our homework first and ensure that where ever we go has a naturist beach, be it in this country or abroad

Slightly off topic.

A friend of mine (naturist) was on holiday in Zante and she said she was the only woman topless on the beach and she overheard two brits (men) slagging her off for being topless.
She found that unacceptable so walked over and tore a strip off the pair of them.

She had previously enjoyed a week of clothes freedom in Cap D'Agde and she said the two guys spoiled her Zante holiday

Topless on a Croatian beach of the Valamar President Hotel on the Babin-Kuk near Dubrovnik. The lady sitting behind me got up and walked towards the sea. The lifeguard stopped her and said that she must put a top on if she is going to walk about. After a few more sentences from the shocked woman she was told she could be topless if she was sitting or laying but not moving about. Ironically 20yards of swimming from the end of the hotel beach is Cava beach, an naturist beach. 🙂

I think it's an all or nothing thing for most women. When I was with my ex we visited a nude beach and she even said at the time 'I'd rather have white boobs than a white bum' so I think it's all or nothing

Now this is interesting! maybe i'm a bit of an exhibitionist, but I have never had any qualms about, or bad reactions to, going topless....anywhere! I truly can't remember the last time I wore a bikini top on a beach other than two years ago on a beach on Rhode Island which had a sign stating topless sunbathing was not permitted!! But that's the Americans for you!
I do own a couple of tops but the only time they get worn is poolside when in France if no one else is topless & there are children around. If anyone IS topless then mine stays in the bag!!
