I expect there are better people more knowlagable then me on this subject, but we have got a bus from Corralejo to the dunes before. I expect taxis are not too expensive.
As for a day trip from North to South. It is possible, we did it onece in a hire car, I think it took about two hours each way. I don't know if if busses run from north to south, but I should think you would spend most of your day traveling.
If you are not having an airport transfer, then I would consider hiring a car, as it won't be much more then a taxi each way, and you have got it for the week.
We use Auto Risen, but I expect others will have their favourites.

That sounds like good advice. If booking a holiday with no transfers then the hire car cost would cover the transfers. Does anyone have an idea on approximate costs for a week's hire on a basic car?

I have noticed that most cheap holidays are in the Caleta De Fuste area which is half way down the Island. That might suggest an hour up to the North and an hour to the South? The central area South of the Airport appears to be more of a family/package resort!

Yes,  and all I would advise is use an on airport company, and look at the small print on their website. Some are a few quid cheaper but pre charge for fuel.
It is good to see that Dick also uses Auto Risen.

The buses are cheap and reliable and a day trip to the south is possible from Corralejo but will only leave you a couple of hours there at the most. We like it because sitting higher up you see more of the scenery - especially if you would otherwise be the driver.
Timetables, etc. can be seen at http://www.fuerteventura.com/Bus/index.shtml and at major bus stops. Be aware that the only published time is the time it leaves and it it a matter of guessing what time it gets to places en route. This sometimes even catches the natives out.

I never hire a car when I go over for 4 weeks but do hire a bicycle when at El Cotillo and rely on the buses the rest of the time.

Transfer from the airport to your resort is perfectly possible by bus and we used to do this until our legs got too arthritic. Until they licenced more taxis the bus journey to Corralejo including changing at Puerto de Rosario was quicker than waiting in the taxi queue.
These days we use Resort Hoppa www.hoppa.com which is cheaper than a taxi, especially as taxis from El Cotillo are as common as hen's teeth. Although there is a taxi rank I have only seen a taxi on it three times in many years of visiting.

In our younger days we walked from the centre of Corralejo to the Grandes Playas many times but the bus service is half hourly during the day and takes you to the centre of the beach.
When there do walk down to the southern end of the beach and sample Renaldo's bistro. It is the only unhomogenised beach café left and his seafood pizza is to die for.

A bus trip to El Cotillo is perfectly possible and to be recommended. When there do try Torino's Beach bar. His paella (order and hour in advance) is one of the "must do" things on our holiday.

We are going in mid May and I have reserved a car for the 10 days from Cicar,( who I have used for the last 25 years,) for the cost of £100. Unlimited mileage and fully insured.
I think that £10 a day is very acceptable and you have flexibility as to when and where you go.

We always hire a car, google holiday autos for comparison but I would recommend "Cicar", the reason we rent is because by the time you have paid for transfers you may as well have your own transport, you can explore the island at your leisure, fuel is cheap, if the weather is not so good in one place it can be good in another ie; north/south, East/West. And yes you can cover the length of the island in 90 - 120 minutes. Great beaches in Jandia, good nightlife in coralejo, la pared worth a visit but the sea is wild and finally el cottillo lagoons are a must. On a personal note we passed through caleta de fuste and had a quick look around but it's not for us. Have a good time.
