Hi All, just wondered if there is anyone local who could check over my laptop, as my wifi connection keeps dropping or takes ages to load. Other items have no issue with connecting.

Many Thanks
John

Have you tried it with other WIFI sources or moved it closer to the source?

Of course it could be the device - this machine is less receptive than MJs. Maybe an antenna problem?  Can you see how it responds hard wired?

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but there must be a PC fix-it type shop local to you, my town isn't huge but I can think of four that I know local to us.

That's probably a better option than just randomly asking for help on a naturist website.

Having said that, I wish you luck.

I think Jonboz was right to ask for local help on the site, if we cant help our fellow naturist friends out its a poor do.

John,

It's difficult to try to diagnose this sort of problem via a forum, but some ideas...

(1) Unlikely you're doing this, but if you connect both your wired Ethernet port and the wireless connection at the same time it will be unstable.

(2) Wireless is notorious for having dead spots and other interference and this will usually correlate with the exact location of the device (i.e. move it somewhere else and it may work OK). So, two tests: (a) if you move the laptop close to your wireless router there is unlikely to be any interference, so does it work OK? and (b) you say other devices work OK but do they work OK in the exact same spot as your laptop has problems?

(3) Virus or other malware? Do you run good and up to date virus checking software? Has it run a full scan in the last 24 hours? Does it report any problems?

(4) Whenever I have had problems with wireless connections on specific laptops it has nearly always been problems with the wireless device drivers and they have needed to be updated. Scammers know this so if you search the Internet you will find all sorts of unreliable sources offering to update your drivers (and probably installing viruses at the same time). If you update your drivers then acquire them from the hardware manufacturer or else from the appropriate Operating System vendor (MS for Windows or Apple for MAC, etc...)

Fuerta, I'm always happy to help my fellow man, naturist or not, but if my washing machine breaks down I call out a repairman/woman.

Definately try moving your devices to another location as a start to troubleshooting if resets did not work. Like others pointed out where say a desktop using wifi is in a house can vary depending on your location. Also the number of devices and their priority can cause issues to. It could also be your local provider is doing maintenance or perhaps your connection itself off the house is wonky. Mine was dropping tons and the issue turned out to be a branch had damahed the connection outside on the pole and a tech got it all fixed up real quick 🙂 I would say call yoir provider first for sure and see if they can diagnose whats going on. Could simply be someone working on the boxes 😊

The obvious first step is to try a cable connection to the router.
If this cures it then the wifi is the problem and you should go through the checks already mentioned.
If this does not cure it then the problem is in the router, the incoming cable from the exchange to the router or your machine in that probable order.

We are a multicomputer household, and I have noticed if I add a new device, or if I fire up one I have not used for a month or so, it will need a router reset.

What type of connection are you using?  if it is a dongle it may be worthwhile having a word with the supplier.  When I had a dongle, I found that after a period they became unreliable and when I took the back the phone shop they replaced with a new one.  If you do this though you would need to take the computer with you so that they can see what is going on.

I would also agree with running an scan on your computer.  I find malware bytes very good,  more than once I have had problems with my laptop and the indigenous antivirus system was showing no problem.  However when I ran malware bytes it showed there were problems.  Each antivirus supplier claims to be the best, but in my opinion they all miss something.  When you think of the number of threats out there it is inevitable really.

Thank all for your comments and advice on this matter. Have tried the obvious fixes with no joy. Will therefore seek advice from a specialist repair outlet.
Many thanks
John
