Hi all,

We're going to Tenerife in November, staying in La Caleta and looking forward to visiting the naturist beaches around the area. Has anyone any experience of these beaches, particularly Playa de Diego Hernandez, which is very close to our hotel?

Any recommendations for nude beaches close by?

Not sure about beaches in La Caleta. The best beach by far is La Tejita. If you get the bus into the main bus depot at Los Christianos and then take the 470 bus to La Tejita, you will notice the stop as you go past the car park after leaving Los Abrigos. Just strip off once you have crossed the road.

Hi,
I’ve just returned from Tenerife and I was lucky enough to visit both La Tejita and Diego Hernandez.

Diego Hernandez is a 20-30 minute walk from La Caleta.

From Calle Bruselas walk up the steps between two new-ish developments.

I counted 121 steps so it’s probably best to climb them before the sun gets too high in the sky!

Cross the road at the top and enter the nature reserve – the access points are fairly obvious. Head along the footpath – just follow your nose. You should soon come to a small bay which is commonly known as “Hippy Bay”. Some of the trails down into the bay are quite steep and strewn with loose rocks. The easiest route is the longest which descends quite gently but climbs steeply out the other side. Steps have been cut into the rock on the climb out to make things a little easier. (I still wouldn’t do this journey in flip-flops!).

From the top of the cliffs the route into Diego Hernandez can be seen winding around the bay. Again the longest trail is the easiest.

The beach is divided into two sandy stretches separated by a rocky outcrop. The water is very clear – good for snorkeling.

There are no facilities on the beach so make sure you take everything you think you are likely to need with you.

To get to La Tejita I caught the 483 bus from Playa de las Americas. (3.10euros, 45 minute journey time, but you get a tour of Los Cristianos, Golf del Sur and Los Abrigos!). If you hire a car I reckon it can’t be more than a 20 minute drive.

La Tejita  is a very long beach with most of the usual facilities – sun beds, umbrellas, snack shop, two guys with cool-boxes mixing up mojitos…
Again the water is very clear.

At the end of my stay on La Tejita I walked into El Medano and had refreshments in a café while waiting for the bus (470 to Los Cristianos, 3.45euros, 1 hour 15 minute journey time).

Cant wait to go again!

Thanks for the detailed response.

just returned from Tenerife where we enjoyed visiting Diego Hernandez at every opportunity. It really is a lovely beach, reached by a very pleasant walk from Caleta. Only about 30 minutes from our hotel so virtually our closest beach!

Looking forward to returning!

Spent all of yesterday afternoon on Diego Hernandez beach. Just as good as we remembered it from 4 years ago although there are now a lot of shacks about the place which were not there then. There was a good mix of people of all ages, mostly couples and a few families. It is a bit of a trek to get there, especially with aging knee joints but it was worth the effort. I took a few photos which I will add to the media centre when we get back.

Back home in the early hours of this morning. I've put a few photos in the media centre and will add a few more when it lets me. (There seems to be a few problems with it this afternoon.)

Back from Tenerife last Friday where we spent some more time on Diego Hernandez beach so I thought it useful to give an update.

Earlier this year the police moved in apparantly to move on a lot of the hippies who had been living there so all the ramshackle shacks have now gone. (A lot of the hippies are still there but now mostly in tents and much more spread around the general area.)

We discovered an alternative route to get to the beach which we think is less strenuous than going from La Caleta but only suitable if you have a car. This is to drive to El Puertito and walk from there. El Puertito is not the easiest place to find. Take the motorway exit for Playa Paraiso and follow the road down. When you see a left turn signed to a couple of resorts take this and keep on going. Eventually you do see a sign for El Puertito.

With regard to the route from La Caleta, if you are planning to take the lower path around the headland from "Hippy Valley" check the tides first. We didn't and found ourselves unable to cross the last 50 metres to the beach! (See pictures in media centre.)

Another piece of advice: at weekends you get lots of locals (mostly textile) there who tend to outnumber the naturists. It's not a problem as everyone is accepting but just to let you know.

Happy to give any more information if requested.
