September’s edition of HE Naturist contains an article about naturism in the Orkneys. It’s worth a read.

The last time I was in Orkney (just a note - it's either Orkney or the Orkney Islands...never the Orkneys) in Spring it was snowing, blizzards & freezing winds so don't hold your breath! I can't help in terms of specific places but it is a very quiet & remote place away from the population centres so you'll have little trouble, weather pemitting, finding quiet, isolated spots where you'd be unlikely to be troubled too much.

Other than that, it's a wonderful place to visit - enjoy.

If you're planning to travel around the islands as opposed to just visiting Mainland, then Sanday might be worth exploring - I believe the name comes from the Norse word, literally meaning 'sandy'. There's numerous beaches all over the place. Again, I can't suggest anywhere where I know nudity would be tolerated or permitted, but it's a large island with a small population so would assume not a bad place to find somewhere where you'd not be disturbed.

If you're sticking to Mainland, my best guess would be anywhere a few miles out of Kirkwall with the probable exception of the main Stromness road which usually has a fair few people, tourist buses, etc., heading up & down it.

We are now thinking about locating a cottage or croft that is good for accessing birdwatching spots and at the same time is isolated. I would love to find a place that's private enough for myself to sunbathe naked, not causing any bother. My wife is will not be joining me but I am sure she will be OK with me doing this if there are no neighbours.
