Yesterday, 17th June, I found a great route, albeit not one to try after a lot of rain.

OS map OL2, start at Stainforth SD822673. Take path slightly N of E towards Malham Moor. Reaching Henside Rd, you can't go through Rough Close farm, so turn left and cross a gate after 1/4 mile onto "Rough Lands". Follow quad tracks (or your nose) NNE to Gingling Hole, climbing two or three gates and a fence on the way. Take track NW through Rainscar Pasture to meet road, cross joining Pennine Way, then left and left to head south over Overdale and follow signs and your nose back to Stainmore.

Absolutely fine, Peter! I've just been looking at the map to see what could be done just to the north of that, which could mean including Pen-y-Ghent. Must explore more over that way.

Because we're in the part of the country that is often near the boundary between warmer, sunnier weather to the SE and cooler, cloudier to the NW, I tend to look for routes where the forecast for the day is better. Yesterday I just about got it right.

Just to clarify, where I said "Malham Moor" that's just the wording on the map in capitals for the Civil Parish name. Of course Malham itself is a fair way to the SE.

Several parts of the route would be, in Wainwright's words, "juicy" if we hadn't had a lot of mainly dry weather.

Alternately, start the walk on the other side of Stainforth beck, along the Pennine bridleway, and you can add in a dip in Catrigg force, before heading north east to join Fellsnude’s route. You may not get Catrigg to yourself…
