@jesse I understand your dilemma, Holkham is great and big but still uncertainty about the cans and cannots unfortunately! Whereas Winterton is narrower but more definitely clearer! Will be there next month and hope to try Holkham again PROPERLY! 😎
How do you mean "caught out"? Trouble, or just seen by somebody when you'd rather not be?
@fellsnude I am not bothered about being seen just want to make I am being correct and respectful! Only I read a number of conflicting comments about the area for naturists at Holkham and nothing with absolute clarity! One even suggested an area for sunbathing and then you had to dress to walk to the sea before undressing to swim. There doesn’t appear to be clear demarcation signs as it’s Crown Estates land! That’s the beauty of Studland with its signage! Both beaches are the best in the UK that I have been to but Studland edges it with the signage. 😎
I hadn't seen anyone all morning so decided to walk across beach. Just about to cover up and three people walked down before could put my shorts on.
Not really concerned about being seen, more about offending someone or getting into a situation. As it happened they just walked the other way.
@barebarmey that’s my approach to, not wanting to cause offence! Gentlemen all the way.
I spent today at Winterton (well, Winterton/Horsey to be more accurate). I'm pleased I chose there too as it was quite breezy. Holkham is magnificent in the vast wide open vistas, but that also means you can get sandblasted if you haven't dragged appropriate shelter with you (and it's a long way to carry things for both beaches).
Winterton was very quiet, both of naturists (maybe 8-10 at a guess) but also general population. I was able to walk from the dunes to the sea for swimming and back without any fear of offending anyone. There were two areas with naturists, both sides of the Bramble Hill gap.
The seals were very inquisitive. They were following me while I swam, and the turns kept diving or skimming the water too. A super place. Although I'm also feeling a bit pebbledashed by the sea (it was mostly fine though, just a big wave caught me while scrambling out one time).
@jesse glad to hear of your wonderful day yesterday and your “swimming companions”! At first it is a bit scary but you soon become used to them popping up but at arm’s distance, really is an experience money cannot buy!
Last time on our walk from the Horsey car park, we saw quite a bit of wildlife too, including a couple of birds of prey. It really is a great part of the country to go to enjoy both the natural world and a naturist world!
Thank you for letting me know!
Went to beach on the 12th July, went with the wife, which much prefer. She does not partake but feel more confident with her there. Was at least 6 others, all men.
Only 5 clothed couples went past. Wife surprised me by wanted to sort out blanket as a couple went past. She usually tells me to cover up. Instead i am stood five yards from them but they made point of saying hello and seemed fine with it.
When packing up for long walk back along beach to Winterton she put my clothes in the bag. She has never wanted me to walk back naked before so was exhilarating. Got dressed at last groin.
@barebarmey it’s nice to know you had a better than expected day at Winterton Dunes! The walk back naked is always a lovely feeling and with your wife’s approach becoming more conducive just embrace it and do not abuse it. My wife is coming around too, but I never push and always check she is okay within the surroundings. Did you see any of the seals sunbathing at all? I will never get over seeing so many and also how close they were when I was swimming in the sea, too! Thank you for sharing about your visit!
Hi, saw very few seals, compared to normal. If you really want to see them and lots of pups then best to visit in winter. We stopped here one Christmas and it was amazing. I think the count was 1000 pups when we arrived.
Closest encounter was when fishing. I fell to sleep lying on the beach using my old beautiful border collie like a pillow and was woken up by a seal that came right up to us to see what we were. Their breath stinks!
@barebarmey we went to Winterton in August 2020 and we walking along the beach from Horsey end when around groyne 42 we can across about 300 of them on the beach resting! At the top of that section is a seal observation area! Have also seen them at Brancaster beach around the area of a freshwater bow!
