Silverdale is a lovely village, quite small, not over developed at all, nearby is the Morcambe Bay Naturist Club at Silverglades (£55/year for what is essentially a very natural wild camping location with a shipping container for a club house - I'm considering joining), MBNC describes itself as a "beach club without a beach" - but thankfully the beaches are not that far away.
You park right next to the beach, the parking area is just stones, very rudimentary, which suites me fine as it keeps visitor numbers low. There were just a few cars and a couple of camper vans.
The tide was right out. Big skies, flat sands. There are signs warning of quick sand - but there were a number of people walking their dogs in the distance, right out on the flat, I found a few bits that were softer but nothing dangerous. This is part of the greater Morcambe Bay area, so you do have to be mindful.
I headed South, once I got out of ear shot of the gaggle of young women I stripped off and made my way down to Jenny Brown's Point, where I found a natural pool of a reasonable size at ///beginning.plays.fevered and deep enough for swimming. There was a group of Young Folk on the path, one of the lads shouted "Your'e a dickhead" at me from 50m away - so I gave them a cheery wave and slipped into the pool. Apparently watching some guy swimming is not very interesting, so they went on their way and I heard nothing more from them.
The pool slopes at 45 degrees, then flattens off to a level where I was able to stand with my shoulders out of the water (I'm about 6 foot) and there are several deeper sections where you cannot touch the bottom and can manage a decent breast stroke.
I had a couple of dips, the water was quite a good temperature, I would imagine the large body of sand stores quite a lot of heat from the sun.
Then I headed out onto the sands and hiked North towards the woods and Arnside park. I was careful to put my shorts on as I neared the beach, no point in aggravating people, then made my way up one of the mountain bike tracks to the top of the woods. The main paths are lower down, so once I could be reasonably sure that I was not going to be disturbed (cyclist being a possibility of course) I disrobed again and made my way up the MTB track to the top of the woods. There is a section at the top that is surrounded by deer fencing, it does have a gate, but it looked quite dense and I was not sure how easy it would be to find my way out. In any case, the MTB path was quite soft underfoot (no shoes at this point, I was wearing only my rucksack) and I was enjoying the woods and the clear path. I was lead onto a more busy track, clearly used by horses (there was a steaming pile and the odd horse shoe print) and a quick glance at the map showed that I was getting nearer to the Arnside holiday park, so I turned around and made my way back along the main path, the sight lines were good, I was unlikely to surprise people at close quarters (which is when they tend to be more aggro) and started back.
A friend called, I stopped to answer, during the call a couple walking the path caught up to where I was but they were perfectly nice and I, having finished my call, walked on ahead, I was making better pace than they. Eventually I got back to the beach, decided to wear my shorts just as I crossed the coastal path (where you tend to get a broader cross-section of the public, young families etc) and then walked back across the bay the way I had come across the sands, enjoying once again the freedom offered by not being encumbered by clothing.
As I neared Silverdale beach I covered again and had a quick pint in the extremely lovely Silverdale Hotel - it's all dark panelled wood-covered walls, cosy armchairs, small spaces, very cosy. The beer garden is an actual garden too, decent clientele, seems to be locals rather than holiday makers (though I am sure some of the houses will be holiday lets) really lovely, will use again.
All in all, great beach, plenty of room, you won't bother anyone if you're out on the sands. Would definitely use again, particularly the pool at Jenny Brown's Point if it's still there (sand can be transitory).
I think it's worth putting this one on as a hike in the Naturist Hiking Lancashire group on MeWe. We probably won't have the weather now, I'm busy most weekends now for the next month, might have to be next year, but definitely one I would like to repeat with a few more numbers.
