Hi all
How about Croatia as holiday destination?

We have been to Greece some times now and I have always seeked out islands where we could combine good atmosphere, nature and C/O beaches looking at the reports on the Captain Barefoot site.

Now Id like to try and find a place where the acomodation is not necessarily Naturist but not to far from a nice C/O beach.
We will probably go by plane stay in an apartment though campsites is ok too and most likely rent a car.

Which places are good for naturists including a parttime naturist spouse?
Where to go if snorkling with the kids is a priority?
What is the level of the food, pitoresque villages, beaches, prices and population etc. compared to Greece?
Best regards Søren

Some years ago we stopped at Trpanj which is on the peninsula north of Dubrovnik in a small cottage right by the sea, which was non-naturist. It was reasonably secluded and limited naturism was possible.

We had several days out at Korcula and then out to Badja and to the naturist beach there. This had a gentle slope into the water. There were also an officially marked FKK beach a short distance from where we were staying. These beaches sea side there consisted of a rocky edge and then deep water.

If I remember rightly it was a Thompson holiday. We had a great day out in Dubrovnik via a high speed catamaran. The prices were reasonable but I felt the locals where still recovering from the wars. Some locals were very friendly but some seemed a bit distant. The clincher is would I go back and I'd have to say yes.

The first pic was within walking distance of our cottage and the second is on the island.

I know quite a fair bit about Croatia, having 'only' been there 8 times! So I will try and answer as best I can from my own experiences and point you to further information so you can come back with any more specific questions. Croatia's attitude to naturism is totally relaxed and from what I read about Greece, very much easier than Greece I think, with many more beaches and places to go. We have been so many times because we love the people who are friendly and easy going, (they can be a bit brusque but it's their way, they do not 'fawn' but are very genuine, the way they phrase questions in English can be different to how we would because of their own language, so they can sound a bit reserved) the food, the beautiful architecture in the towns, the stunning coastline unspoiled by large complexes in the main, it doesn't cater for the 18-30 clubbers thankfully, and the costs for us in the UK is low compared to the Eurozone. It will certainly be cheaper than Greece (except Dubrovnik.)The only time we have been anywhere else on holiday, in Spain, we regretted and went back to Croatia the next year. Croatia has areas quite distinctive from another with their own character.

Istria in the north is the epicentre so to speak for naturism with a lot of campsites both wholly and partly naturist, plus numerous beaches. The beaches are generally rocky or pebbly though if you go somewhere like Valalta naturist resort , they are more like landscaped terraces next to the shoreline as well. We visited on a day pass, and I think you can visit all campsites on one, you don't have to stay there. It's fair to say that Istria's beaches are not Croatia's best, but that isn't the only reason we go there, the towns such as  Rovinj with Venetian architecture are so beautiful, and the food in the konobas which are small restaurants is fantastic. If you hire a car you can visit the inland hill towns like Groznjan and Motovun which are wonderful.

This year we also visited Rab which is an island in the Kvarner further south. This was where naturism all began in the Adriatic at Kandarola beach, which is reached by taxi boat from Rab Town. It is quite a set up with a restaurant, bar, showers and loungers. It is mainly German and Austrian tourists who go there as impossible to reach from the UK unless you are an independent traveller! I would like to return there for longer, as thankfully, British visitors are rare to non existent.

The Central Dalmatian islands like Hvar, Korcula and Vis are really special. There is a magic in the islands quite apart from the mainland, and I think no.1 of my favourite places in Croatia is Hvar Town. It is a lovely, glamorous town with lots of life, but outside of July and August, the main clubbing months, it is lively and not overpowering. It has a very sophisticated and diverse mix of nationalities visiting. The Pakleni islands 10 minutes away by taxi boat are all clothing optional, the nearest, Jerolim, is absolutely wonderful. A beautiful new grill bar opened there a couple of years ago, which you have to slip something on for, but you can walk around the island naked if you wish. The water around the islands is the clearest I can imagine swimming in. If you can get to Vrboska on Hvar island there is a small naturist site there.

Korcula is quieter than Hvar but a lovely old town again, and some beaches accessible by boat or bus.

Most beaches are rocks or pebbles/shingle but the pay off is the water is beautifully clear. There are some sandy beaches but they are rare. The only one I have been to is Sunj on Lopud island, which is half naturist. It is a beautiful beach on a very quiet island reachable by regular ferry from Dubrovnik. We visited Dubrovnik 7 years ago and are unlikely to return because the prices there are out of all proportion to the rest of Croatia, and the cruise ship industry has killed it. There are so many ships visiting apparently per day, it is more akin to a theme park with thousands more people swarming through than a small town can comfortably absorb. The nearest naturist beach is the rock beach on Lokrum island off shore but the naturist opportunities around Dubrovnik are comparatively limited.

All the local towns/islands websites have lists and details of apartments to rent. Snorkelling I am not sure about as not something I do. You could try looking at tourist board sites or posting a question on the Trip Advisor forum for Croatia.

If you don't mind campsites, then have a look at Roan Holidays.  They have a site at Vestar in Croatia (textile) which is next to a beach, and the far end of the beach is naturist.  You can still book two weeks in a ready-erected tent (with proper beds, fridge, furniture) for £106 at the end of May (from £89 earlier) - and a mobile home from £274 for two weeks!

Thank for your ansvers everybody especially to You Brigitte for the in debth review and links and to you Davie for the pics.
Veronica, the £274 for two weeks you quoted is that for a family of 4?
If so the prices you quote seems more than reasonable, thanks.
Best regards Søren

Yes, the price would include children - but check out the website: http://www.roancampingholidays.co.uk/ for more details.  It's over the Spring Bank Holiday period, too, so possible to have a very cheap holiday during school holidays.

Brigitte, we're in Vis at the moment and we love it !  Such a laid back place even for August.  Beaches busy where there's road access, but otherwise it's pretty quiet.  Plenty of nude sunbathing, even a short walk from the main town.  Few brits apart from the yachting fraternity. I'll post more when I get back in September.

Very jealous jonny. We had a few hours at Komiza after visiting the Blue Cave, which was a lovely little fisherman's town with small beaches right underneath the cottages. Afetr exploring the streets we walked away round the corner and found a stretch where it didn't seem to matter what you did. Vis is getting more and more popular because of it's off the beaten track appeal.

I presume Johnny that a small stone cottage would be very cheap to buy on this lovely island???
