I'm lucky enough to be going to Fuerteventura in a few weeks . I've read a lot about Cofete beach on the net . I've decided to go there for a day but I just don't know what to believe about the drive there . Some saying its terrifying and only possible with 4x4 , others that its not too bad . Has anyone made the journey? How bad is it really?

I believe you will definitely require a 4x4 because after the harbour at Morre Jable the road is stone i.e. dust track.
I have never been to Cofete but I have seen the beach when I walked 90% naked up to Fuerteventura's highest peak Pico de la Zarza.
There seemed to be an industrial units near Cofete but the beach was deserted and miles long.
Enjoy 🙂 🙂

We a few years back. Couldn't find anything like a road, so went down a track in a normal saloon car. We gave up half way, then spent the rest of the holiday worrying that we had ripped the paint apart by the rubbing of the plants down the side as we drive down.

Definitely a 4x4, or a boat.

Zav.

Some years ago we rented a 4x4 for the holiday specially so we could get to Cofete. We managed about a mile of the track, but it was so rough and uncomfortable that we gave up. It has to be said the vehicle we hired was a really lousy bone-shaker anyway. And I've owned three Land Rovers in my time and have some experience of off-roading, but we couldn't face the journey.

Having said that, a year or so later a friend of mine got there in an ordinary hire car. Don't know if the track had been improved or recently graded, but he said it was OK - just! But it's quite a long way to travel off the the tarmac - quite a few miles as I recall.

Cofete (Fuerteventura)

Hi found this link of trip in June 2013, looks reasonable, just take care at the edge of the road.

Fascinating - thank you for posting the link!

A number of observations:

1. The video begins far beyond where we gave up.

2. Clearly ordinary cars are able to make the journey - there were plenty in the video.

3. However, there may/will be an issue concerning the terms and conditions of using a hire car. There will be a restriction - most likely relating to insurance - preventing driving the vehicle off the tarmac.

4. Any individual will have to make up their own mind, but it is quite a 'long way' off the tarmac.

5. With hindsight, we would have probably done better in a car with softer springing, than in the bone-jarring hard-sprung 4x4 we rented. The journey taken slowly in a car may be reasonably bearable.

You are probably right about hire restrictions and rough roads, When we used to visit Skiathos and hired a scooter ( much younger then) they were restricted to tarmac roads, but by being sensible and not trying to tear along rough roads we manage, even though some of the tracks were so steep we had to get off while it went up the hills at walking pace.

Found lots of almost deserted small beaches, playing Robinson Crusoe, shelters made from driftwood and towels when it became too hot.

Those were the days, youngsters should do things like that while they are able.

Just back from a wonderful week in Morro Jable , Fuerteventura. I can confirm that the track to Cofete is easily possible by ordinary car . It is a bit uncomfortable but well worth the effort . We went early in the morning and fond ourselves the first on the beach ! We walked to the rocky outcrop to the north and back . About 3 hours taking it easy and just enjoying the solitude . I did have a swim but i would not recommend it , there are some strange currents . My new partner is a bit unsure about going aunatrel so i thought that this would be a good first taste , no one to see so why not was my reasoning . She agreed to give it a go only for a police helicopter to swoop over us at a 100 feet a few seconds later!! Not the best introduction to naturism . Luckily she saw the funny side . By the time we got back to the access road there were maybe 30 people on the beach , all textile , which I thought a bit odd as all reports I had read described cofete as predominantly naturist . Never mind we had a wonderful time there  .
