Hi folks,
Apologies if this question has been discussed before, but are their any legalities involved with skinny dipping in reservoirs? I am hopefully going for a bike ride over the summer and will be passing a few reservoirs and would be quite keen on getting in them if the weather is good. I had read on the internet that it is possibly illegal to do this though so just wondered on people's thoughts?

many have prohibition signs posted - I haven't always followed them - depends whereabouts you are

Please refrain from swimming in reservoirs they are often deeper and colder than anticipated.

I agree there have been a few tragedies in reservoirs around here.

do a little research as to what was there before reservoir. are there hidden
dangers below the water line? could your body and heart take the cold shock? and look at local by laws. after which nudity in non sexual way is not illegal

Ok folks, I understand what you are saying about the dangers of what is under the surface and such, but what is the difference between swimming in a natural lake and say a reservoir? Some of the reservoirs up this way such as Kielder reservoir don't look any different to a huge lake apart from the obvious huge dam at one end. Surely if you keep away from any potential pipes that would suck you in then it's no different to the likes of lake Windermere or something? I'm not been awkward here, just wondering why a reservoir is more dangerous than a natural lake.

The outdoor and wild swimming organisations have certainly done a lot of work on this one and the general conclusions are approximately:
(i) There are by-laws against swimming in almost all reservoirs.
(ii) People do it anyway.
(iii) It is safe if you are a practised and competent cold water swimmer who is aware of the dangers associated with such things as sluices and water intakes.
(iv) It can be dangerous if you are not an experienced cold water swimmer who knows their limitations.

Having just had a look at our local reservoirs web site, they do organise swim race days, but do recommend wearing wet suits, cos the water is cold, very cold.
However in saying that , general swimming in the reservoir is prohibited.

Surely the water in a reservoir isn't any colder than that of a lake though? I took my kids to Lake Windermere last night and we went canoeing just at the edge (without wetsuits). Fell in a few times and it was freezing, but bareable for short periods of time.

Many reservoirs run by the Canal & Rivers Trust allow open water swimming. I have yet to see any swimmer try this without a wetsuit.
