Hi folks,
(Long time lurker here, but a grateful one for all the information/guidance posted over the years)

Now, we're planning a trip to Arran this summer and of course we already have our eyes on Cleat's Shore. Beyond that, how busy is the island in June? We've done Mull in the past and found secluded beaches or followed streams up to plunge pools where it was quiet enough to go nude. Funnily enough the only time we were discovered, it was a by a family whose teenage daughter took our lead and went nude too as they walked by. So we're feeling a bit emboldened after that.

We're thinking about nude hiking too, and Coire Fhionn Lochan looks good for a skinny dip. Feasible on the island?

Hello there

Very quick reply but in my experience rural Scotland is as good as it gets for off the cuff nudity, if in the unlikely event that someone does see you, it's generally from a distance but generally there's not a soul around

I have limited experience of Arran but I don't see it being any different, find somewhere remote and go for it! However, if your finances will stretch to it, can I suggest you get a Calmac island hopper ticket which will get you three crossings from memory. Go to Arran then cross into Argyll on the Lochranza to Claonaig ferry, and if you are really adventurous then go to kennacraig and go over to Islay, the white sandy beaches on the north coast are as good as anywhere else in the world, providing the weather is with you of course but then that's Scotland!!

Cheers
Paul

Hi Tibetan Hat,
Can I suggest that you search for "Scottish beaches" and the string will give information on cleat's shore. If you don't manage to find it or if you wish more details, feel free to PM me.

[gmod]There s some info about Cleat's on NC's CO Beaches page HERE[/gmod]

A public apology from me to anybody who clicked on a private link which I mistakenly posted here.
I omitted to check that the link in question was in the publicly accessible portion of the web site.

Thank you for the replies. For us Arran will probably be enough, the wildlife, the scenary, history and so forth.

Isle of Arran sounds great, have a fab holiday. We're heading off for Loch Fyne in September, and will follow Johns advice and look on google maps for secluded beaches.
Looks pretty remote so can't see it being a problem.

Well, Arran was fabulous despite the weather. At least if you wait around a bit it changes quite quickly up there.

As for nude activities, I have to say Cleat's Shore was a real disappointment. Even at low tide there was very little sand, and all of it covered in rotting seaweed, otherwise it was rocks and heavy shingle. Considering how delightful the rest of the island is we didn't really see any point in staying there, despite having the option of going clothes free.
I did have a short stroll east and got as far as the lovely soft sandy beach at Kilmory, and was tempted to stay nude there as it was deserted, but that seemed like bad form given the official (albeit much less attractive) beach is next door, and we would have been overlooked by the distant houses in the village.

The only other opportunity was Coire Fhionn Lochan, a pool up a steep walk in the north of the island, where I had a quick and very cold skinny dip, with only a couple of hillwalkers just about in sight way up above us on the ridge.

Still loved the holiday, but maybe next year it'll be Wales, where the beaches just seem much more free to naturism, and we're generally less nervous about finding ourselves in trouble with textiles and misinterpretations of the law.

Well at least you can say you've been there done that. It's another one of the list and you got to have a holiday in the process.
Better luck next time in Wales

Hi Tibetan Hat

I holiday with my family in Arran for 2 weeks in August every year (going very soon) and it is a truly beautiful place. However, your comments about Cleat's Shore are spot on.

I visited the beach last year and it was not very inviting. For naked opportunities, sometimes it is better to walk along the coast or in the hills, find a secluded spot and strip off. A few years ago, I walked round the beach from Sannox off the beaten track and was able sunbathe naked for a spell.

Sometimes, I do envy others who have easier access and better opportunities to be naked, socially, in the rest of the UK.

Yes, we did a walk around Sannox and if the weather had been a little better may well have spent some time there nude. There is actually a lovely pool on the Sannox Burn, looked deep enough to swim in, and although it's right beside the footpath it seemed quiet enough for a quick skinny dip, again weather permitting!
Otherwise, the beaches are a little risky, on the peaceful western side you are always visible from the road, and those on the eastern shore are tourist hotspots.

I go to Arran on Sunday 30 July. I'll let you know how I got on with achieving any naked time.

So far and 1 week into the holiday, I have not managed a visit to Cleat's Shore mainly due to lack of opportunity but also weather has been a factor. Sometimes, I lie on the balcony if no one is around but no opportunity so far. For different reasons, all family members are returning to mainland so it will just be me and my wife here from Tuesday onwards. Weather is to improve so there may be opportunities for nude time later in the week - here's hoping.

Good luck, I managed to get about an hour or so of nude time at Kinshaldy beach today, fingers crossed that you get the same opportunity on the west coast

I have now returned from my holiday on Arran and did not manage a trip to Cleat's Shore for a number of reasons including the presence of other family members on holiday with me restricting the opportunity to drive there.

Every cloud has a silver lining. On Saturday morning, I took the dogs for a walk on my own up the glen behind our holiday accommodation. The path was a single track in woods and there was no-one around. I removed all my clothes and walked naked for 30 minutes or so. When I reached what is called the forestry road, I turned around and went back down.  On the way back, I met 2 walkers (clothed) coming up the path and I quickly dressed. They must have seen me but they walked passed me saying good morning and went on their way.

The feeling of walking naked was fantastic and it makes me think that I should try to do more nude hill walking but the big question is where as you are always likely to bump into someone. Anyway, it was good while it lasted.
