I recently visited La Gomera and since I've never seen anyone talk about it on here, I thought I would review the naturist beaches I visited.
Apparently the number one nudist beach on the island (ie it has sand not just rocks) is at Valle Gran Rey and is called Playa Ingles. Unfortunately I read that it was extremely risky to swim there. As swimming is the main reason I go to beaches, and it was the opposite side of the island to my accommodation, I decided not to go.
The three beaches I did visit were all rocky, so I recommend shoes and bring something soft to lie on.
Playa del Medio is within walking distance from the Playa Jardin Tecina, which is by some distance the major hotel on the island. (Apparently it used to have a nudist terrace). On the beach were about 30 people there that afternoon, men and women of all ages. It's a long beach (250m) so plenty of room to spread out. No eavesdropping here. At low tide it is possible to cross to the next door beach which is also nudist and have a look.
Playa La Guancha was difficult to get to, I parked in a random layby near San Sebastian, the capital, hoping I was close and then set off on a path up to a headland. The other side of the headland was a 250m long beach. Allow an hour to walk it although someone exceptionally fit and knew where they were going could do it in half that time. It was a long beach with one costumed swimmer and a naked couple. You really did feel somewhere exceptionally remote here. I think it would have been busier had I stayed into the afternoon, and judging by the number of people I passed on the headland walk back to the car, maybe a few more were turning up for the afternoon at the beach?
Another beach I visited in the morning was Avalo, north of San Sebastian. This is smaller than the other two. I got there at 10am on a Friday and was really worried that it wasn't the right place. Other people did turn up and take their clothes off though. Three other couples were there by the time I left around 1:30.
All of them were worth going to once but not again. Definitely want sand next time. But La Gomera was a fascinating island and I'm really glad I've been there. If you want to explore it properly you'll need to hire a car and be prepared to drive in the fog that envelops the middle of the island.
