Hi, I'm looking to go on holiday to Italy in the summer. How naturist friendly are the beaches over there?
Well there are SOME and some resorts and sites. It gets all of four pages in the world's best nude beaches and resorts book. It isn't a massive mainstream kind of thing like France. Another reason why Italian naturists tend to decamp en masse to Croatia. They love it in Istria. The sea quality is also generally better. But the best option from four pages seems to be Pizzo Greco with its own beach right down on the 'heel.' It has bungalows and caravans to hire. We visited Capocotta beach outside Rome in 2000. It is a busy beach and fine for what it is, but I didn't fancy the look of the water. Lido Di Dante near Ravenna also seems worth googling.
'I figure life's a gift and I don't intend wasting it. You never know what hand you're gonna get dealt next.' Titanic.'Shine as a glow worm if you cannot as a star.' Thomas Andrews, shipbuilder.
'We'll miss the matinee but we'll make the night show.' The Greatest Show on Earth 1952.
I have friends who are very keen on Italy; they go there every year at the start of the season. They recommand Pizzo Greco (Calabria) and Club Naturista Gargano (Pugia)
Many years ago when on holiday in Rome we hired a scooter and headed out to the coast - there was quite a wide section of a general public beach that was officially nudist. On return a few years later it was still there but a lot smaller.
Further down the coast (50Km or so) there was also quite a wide area sectioned off for nudists, but also on other beaches there were many nudist or at least top less people without anyone that bothered - but that was well over 10 years ago.
So, the attitude I think on most beaches used to be live and let live, now I think things have changed so probably best to use official ones - I'm not aware of the local laws on public nudity.
The following site should help

Since we are Italian, we can confirm that the information already given is generally correct. In Italy naturism is not as widespread as in other countries and there are relatively few beaches and resorts but many of them are really beautiful. The site indicated (which is that of the Italian naturist federation) is not up to date, there are also some other authorized beaches including two in Sardinia (Piscinas and Capo Ferro) that are really wonderful. The site of the association A.N. Ita to which we are subscribed is more up to date

I see now that the translation in English does not work, I will ask the webmaster, anyway the localization is understandable and if you need more infos I can give them here.
We often go to the authorized beach of San Vincenzo (in Tuscany), near there is also a naturist camping, you can go to the authorized beach of the Elba island and make trips to Bibbona or the National Park of Uccellina (they are not authorized).
In Italy, if you are nude in unauthorized beaches/places, you can get heavy fines. In traditionally naturist beaches it is rare, but you do at your own risk.

Google translate is a good tool to use on non-English sites provided you are sharp enough to reinterpret some of its oddities when they occur. It is also useful when the English version of a web site seems a bit garbled because of the ways dictionaries sometimes work.
An amusing example of dictionary mistranslation occurred on a canal boat which an English couple wished to name "Little House" in Welsh. Using the dictionary they came up with "Tai Bach" which is Welsh for toilet or public convenience.

Thanks. On non naturist beaches. How possible is it to get changed without having to do the towel dance?

I would not chance it in Italy.
We don't frequent many non naturist beaches but if you do it rapidly when you're sitting and without giving the idea you want to exhibit it should not be a problem. We are scuba divers and when we prepare in that way no one cared about.

That is the technique which I have used on crowded textile beaches.

Many textiles do the same, so it's not an original idea. But going back to the question, why caring about how to wear a swimsuit in a textile beach when you can be nude in a naturist one? And this is worth in Italy like everywhere.

Sometimes one can be constrained to use textile beaches by the preferences of others in the party.

Unfortunately, my partner and 3 kids are textiles therefore I don't have much choice but to frequent textile beaches.
