Heading off to the Isle of Wight at the weekend. Staying at a place called Brook which is very near to a long beach which seems to join to a beach called Compton.
Having been no where but my back garden this year i really crave a long walk naked along a beach without carrying clothes hindering me. Wondered if it was appropriate at this beach or if there are any others in the area that it would be.
I have heard of the one at Blackgang and hope to visit here, is this still popular with naturists. Looking on Google earth it looks busy but unsure if naturists or not.
Any suggestions please?
I haven't done it this year but my favourite beach walk was from Brighstone to Brook, about 4km. Check the Tide Tables for lowest because it's mostly narrow sand and only one path up the cliffs at Chilton Chine, beside IoW Pearl.
From the Military Road walk through the Grange Farm Camp Site (it's a public FP), through the caravans to the beach at Buddle Brook.
Two walks:
Turn left, S.E., for an easy sand walk for 1km till you reach the pebble bank. If energetic,
you can struggle over the pebbles to Shepherd's Chine, but it's not easy. Usually deserted, the water is clear here.
Or:
Turn right, N.W., at Buddle Brook and enjoy the 4km to Brook, only covering up for the last half km when you meet the Brook dog walkers. The water is not clear here as it washes in over shale and mud.
Compton wide sandy beach is too busy to be naturist-friendly, but you may be OK at the far-right dead-end near the chalk cliff.
Blackgang access is difficult/impossible due to constant cliff erosion, but a fabulous beach of tiny pebbles. Swimming is dangerous due to strong Channel tide round the point.
Best time of the year now, when the kids have gone back to school (???)!.
Enjoy!
Thank you for the reply. We are stopping at brook and am thinking of the morning walk with my dog so am i best to head onto the beach at Brook and heading to the left / southeast towards Sudmoor point? Is it busy along this section?
It can be busy up to the big rock and Sudmoor but very quiet beyond that to Chilton Chine and Buddle Brook.
There's a nice cliff top path all along this coast, if the tide access is a problem.
looking at the tides they are highest in the morning, not great for a morning walk. Might have to see what the cliff top is like. Do these tend to be quiet?
Weekend can be busy, but better the further South you go.
Was doing a circular walk today, clothed, and this walk starts/ends at a carpark above Rocken end / blackgang. Wife would not go down due to right ups on difficult access so I went on my own. I thought access was easy, no problems at all. Beach was great. Unfortunately as wife was waiting could not stop so quick skinny dip and back up the hill.
Great beach and lovely mix of people, mainly couples.
I had not been there for years, and now age prevents. So thanks for the update. Others will no doubt be interested.
I remember the remote beach walk North from there, past the original Blackgang Chine to Whale Chine when the tide was right.
Went back today. A chap made it down after parking his mobility scooter and doing it with crutches.
Beautiful day to spend on the beach, couldn't really have been better.
I recently downloaded the “iSwimNude” app and it lists two naturist beaches on the Isle of Wight, Blackgang which has already been mentioned and Yaverland near Sandown.
