Anyone know of any safe (i.e. suitable for a very first time) walks in North Dorset or Wiltshire, or for that matter, anywhere in Dorset. I am looking for something remote and thinking of walking it early or late on a week day - probably before or after a work trip away.
From what I can see, I quite like the look of Melbury and the area east of Shaftsebury. There appears to be a large area of National Trust land and even some wooded slopes, although without street view its always hard to tell on Google Maps!
Thanks in anticipation.
Not an area I know well enough to recommend any sites specifically but, if you are available during the working day next Thursday (15 July) the SOC have a ten mile walk that starts near Salisbury. The walk is described as follows on the SOC walks list:
...we follow one of the lesser known ridgeways to the west of Salisbury, including the ancient earthwork of Chiselbury. There are fine sweeping views as we follow the lip of a steep escarpment. Be aware that, in some respects, this is our toughest walk and rough underfoot in places, but it has nevertheless attracted record numbers and we can be nude for 85% of the time.
If you'd like to join it, I'd recommend dropping an email to the walks co-ordinator to get details of meeting time and place (there are contact details on the SOC walks website). I hope to be on that walk and it would be good to put a face to another NC member so if you are going to come along please let us know.
Have fun,
Ian.

Would like to try a walk like that but already double booked that Thursday. Shame 🙁
Found a good walk but posted separately. Admittedly Hampshire rather than Wiltshire or Dorset, but it was close.

Pity. However SOC do a number of their walks in Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire so, if the length of the walks is suitable for you (typically 9 to 12 miles but at a fairly relaxed pace) it might still be worth checking out the walks schedule on their site to see if anything suits you.
Have fun,
Ian.
