I'm looking for accessible walks near to my routes home when I am out on business. Tried this out earlier this week and it was OK. Nice walk but never been that keen on the Forest. Felt a little exposed. I would give it 3/5.
Started from car park on Ocknell Plain (SU232118) and walked south to the corner of "Slufters Enclosure" and stripped at the edge of the wood. I then had some protection from the trees and long views across the plain. The trees, however, kept parting, leaving me exposed to views from the woodland paths within. A parked car showed someone was in there but I never saw them. Came across a herd of fallow deer who ran off, showing how undisturbed the area was. If you go too far south you come into view of a lay-by on the A31 that had lots of lorries in it, so I kept well away.
There are wide tracks crossing the plain but I was wary of horse riders so I did not walk along them. I was also wary of the ponies, which I thought was a little strange. Maybe I felt they were a little human, or it might just have been the thought of the flies that follow them around. Flies are definitely more of a nuisance to the naked?
